CHF 500 stand fee per day at Sechseläutenplatz in Zurich. CHF 350 for a permit at Bahnhofplatz in Bern. CHF 200 alone for setting up and tearing down a promotion stand. Or: a branded eCargo bike that costs CHF 0 in stand fees, is ready in 5 minutes and generates more attention than any folding table. At PROMOKANT we've been betting on eCargo bikes for 3 years. Here's why.

Why eCargo bikes are changing the promotion market
Promotion in Swiss city centres gets harder every year. Permits get more expensive, available spaces get scarcer, lead times get longer. At the same time, brands expect maximum visibility with minimum effort. eCargo bikes resolve that contradiction.
An eCargo bike is an electrically assisted cargo bike with a branded transport box. It's vehicle, storage and promotion stand in one. It needs no power socket, no water, no build crew. A promoter rides it to the location, flips the box open and gets going.
The biggest advantage: mobility. A stationary stand sits for 8 hours in the same spot. An eCargo bike changes location 3 to 4 times a day. Morning at the station, midday on campus, afternoon in the shopping street. You follow the traffic instead of waiting for it.
And: eCargo bikes get noticed. In a pedestrian zone full of smartphone zombies, a hot-pink branded bike with an open cool box is an eye-catcher. The approach rate is 25 to 40% above a classic stand. Because the bike sparks curiosity. "What's that? Can I try something?"
The advantages over the classic promotion stand
| Criterion | Classic stand | eCargo bike |
|---|---|---|
| Stand fee | CHF 200-800/day | CHF 0 (mobile) |
| Set-up/tear-down | 30-60 minutes | 5 minutes |
| Permit | 4-8 weeks lead time | Usually not needed (mobile) |
| Flexibility | Fixed in one spot | 3-4 location changes/day |
| Transport | Delivery van needed | Rides itself there |
| Visibility | Medium (familiar sight) | High (curiosity factor) |
| Weather protection | Possible with tent | Limited (umbrella) |
| Cooling | Power needed | Cooling packs (8 h autonomy) |
The only downsides: in heavy rain you have to stop (no tent possible). And loading capacity is limited: 500 to 2'000 samples depending on size. For activations with 5'000+ samples per day, you need a nearby restock point or a second bike.
Use cases: sampling, tasting, guerilla
Street sampling: the core format. The promoter rides the bike to the hotspot, distributes products, changes location after 2 hours. Perfect for drinks, snacks, cosmetic samples. Cost per contact: CHF 1.50 to 3.00.
Mobile tasting: the bike box becomes a tasting station. With integrated cutting or portioning area. Ideal for cheese, chocolate, spreads. Smaller than a retail stand, but more intimate and with higher dwell time per contact.
Guerilla promotion: eCargo bikes are perfect for guerilla activations. Show up by surprise, distribute, vanish. At festivals, sports events, trade fairs. No stand fee, no permit, no waiting time.
Combination with roadshows: eCargo bikes as satellites to a larger roadshow activation. The bikes ride into the neighbourhood and funnel passers-by to the main event. Or they cover spots a big stand can't go.
Event support: at open-air festivals or sports events, bikes are worth gold. They go anywhere: meadows, squares, parks, where no delivery van is allowed.
Branding and design
The bike is your brand ambassador on wheels. The branding must land. At PROMOKANT we have our own eCargo bikes with a modular branding system. That means: the base structure stays, the brand goes on via wraps, magnetic foils or swap panels.
Tips for good bike branding:
- Less is more. Logo, one colour, one claim. No text overload. The bike rolls past people, you have 2 seconds.
- Colour over text. A pink bike with a PROMOKANT logo is recognised before anyone can read a wordmark.
- Use the box. The open box with products is the eye-catcher. Don't close it. Show what's inside.
- Lighting. LED strips on the box for evening activations. Looks like a food truck, only cooler.
Production time for a fully branded bike: 5 to 7 working days. With magnetic foil you can swap the branding for different brands. We use that at PROMOKANT for different clients with the same bike fleet.
Logistics and costs
The cost structure is the strongest selling point. Here's the typical calculation:
Daily cost per bike:
- Bike rental incl. branding: CHF 150 to 250
- Promoter: CHF 350 to 450
- Cooling and consumables: CHF 30 to 50
- Total: CHF 530 to 750 per bike per day
For comparison: a classic promotion stand costs CHF 1'200 to 2'500 per day (incl. stand fee, set-up/tear-down, transport, power, staff).
The saving is 40 to 60%. And you get more flexibility, more locations, and often more contacts on top.
Logistically you need: a place to park the bikes (garage, storage), a charging point (standard socket, 4 to 6 hours charging time), and a plan for sample restock on multi-day activations.
Field example: BAER Grillkäse summer campaign
In summer 2025 we ran an eCargo bike campaign for BAER's new Grillkäse. 3 bikes, 6 cities, 12 activation days.
The setup: every bike was fully branded in the BAER look (yellow-black), with an integrated tasting station on the cargo box. The promoters distributed Grillkäse samples at lakes, in parks and at public grill spots. Exactly where the audience grills.
The results:
- 18'400 samples distributed in 12 days
- 14'200 qualified contacts (with conversation)
- Cost per Contact: CHF 2.10
- Organic social media reach: 45'000 impressions
- Sales lift during the activation period: +65% (measured in Coop stores in the activation cities)
The trick: the bikes could ride directly to the grill spots. A classic stand would have sat in the car park, 200 metres away. The bikes were in the middle of the action. That made the difference.
